How many women really know how to apply make-up properly? GLORIA GRIFFITHS tries out four of the best make-up schools to get some top tips from the experts

Beginner's Paradise

Absolutely Beautiful

This company will send a make-up artist to your home anywhere in the country. Impressively, I get a visit on a Sunday morning from Lola who has the biggest make-up kit I've ever seen. We discuss what I usually do to my face then she delves into my beauty bag.

She suggests how I should use what I have to best effect. For foundation, she tells me to always use a sponge and shows me how. I do the other side of my face and can see that it does give a more even, polished finish. We continue with eyes, lips and blusher, using my products; Lola doing one side of my face, me the other.

Then she suggests colours and products I've never used before, mostly because I don't know what colours suit me and have never known how to apply things like eyeshadow without looking like I've been in a fight. It's all good basic beauty know-how that no one ever seems to tell you, like where exactly you should put blusher.

Ideal for anyone nervous around make-up; well worth the money.

  Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed my lesson with Aida.  She was thorough, answered all of my questions, and was extremely personable to boot!

   

  After Aida and I met on Saturday, I went out that night and got compliments on how great I looked from my boyfriend and two friends I hadn't seen in awhile.  And this morning, when I did my very first "10 Minute Fix" getting dressed for work, I could see a difference.  Aida taught me tricks to bring out my eyes, give me cheekbones, etc. and although I don't look as sensational as when she did me (have got a lot to learn!) I still look noticeably better - especially the eyes.  I'm now inspired to practice, practice, as Aida preached.  Our session was so worth it!  I will definitely be telling my friends what an outstanding service you provide.

  Can you please pass on my thanks to Ema who did my hair and make-up for my wedding day last Saturday. I felt like a million dollars and had so many compliments - mostly saying how well I scrub up!

  I'm so glad that I decided to have a professional, not only did it ensure that I had a look that lasted all day but it meant that I didn't have to stress over attempting to make myself look half decent myself. I would definitely recommend Absolutely Beautiful to my friends.

  I just wanted to drop you a mail to say how thrilled I was with the lovely hair-up and stunning makeup you did for me for my Christmas Party at London Zoo on December 3rd.

  I received many compliments on both my hair and makeup especially the 'smoky eyes'. I stood at the bar talking to a guy I had been in a meeting with two days before, and guess what, he didn't recognise me!

  I did dance after all, and my hair stayed in place all night!

  I still haven't gotten my pictures developed yet, but if there are any good ones I'll send a few on to you.
